Samuel (Jarvis) Hinson ~ Tattoo artist ~ Animal advocate

Meet Samuel (Jarvis) Hinson, a tattoo artist.  He grew up near the border of New Mexico, Colorado. He is an animal advocate. He has seven pets, three dogs and four cats, and every one of them has been adopted.

Advise he would give to a crowd of people,” To laugh, be nice, save the planet, and adopt an animal.”


Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career? 

A: “It just kind of happened. It started a long time ago. I’ve been to two apprenticeships over the course of seven years. The last one started in Atlanta. I didn’t have a plan B. I moved from New Mexico and started my career.“

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Knoxville, and what do you love there?

A:” Central Flats and Taps for sure. My girlfriend and I eat everything there. And the drinks are amazing!”

Q: How long have you lived or worked in Knoxville?

A:” I’ve been here for around 8 years.”

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in Knoxville?

A:”Well, that depends on what you define as interesting, hahaha! I’ve met a lot of crazy people, no one specifically famous, just a lot of different people.”

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?

A:” I either want to go to Germany or Russia. The reason is to look at the architecture and the history behind their buildings. They hold onto their history where America builds new things.”

Q: What is your favorite movie OR what is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?

A:” The first movie I remember would be E.T. I was a little kid, scared out of my mind about it. As for my favorite movie, “No Country for Old Men”, Quentin Tarantino Films and pretty much anything in the horror genre.”

Q: What advice would you give a crowd of people?

A:” To laugh, be nice, save the planet, and adopt an animal.”

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

A:” Disney world and I’m going in February.”

Q: What is your favorite music/ 3 bands you would like to see (dead or alive)?

A:” My music taste changes constantly. My favorite band is called Brass Against. Next month they’re playing in Nashville and I have tickets. I’m also a big fan of The Sword and Queens of the Stone Age.”

Q: What current /former local business makes you the most nostalgic about Knoxville?

A:” Anything downtown, market square, those types of things, the structures and the building have held together very well. The Tennessee TheaterThe Bijou and all these iconic places downtown. When you see those it takes you back a little bit.”

Q: Choosing anyone alive who is not related to you, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where in Knoxville would you go?

A:” A lot of the brainiacs in history, Einstein, Tesla, Addison, any of those guys. But more so, someone involved in tattooing, a legend, someone like Samuel O’Reilley or Paul Rogers.  I would take him to Central Flats and Taps, because it’s a comfort place.”

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about Knoxville?

A:” The mountains, the sunrises, the sunsets. It is beautiful here. Once you get a little bit outside of Knoxville, you can see everything within an hour drive.”

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

A:” Hopefully, still tattooing, loving my job.“

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

A:” I’m a little bit of a Harry Potter nerd. I like Harry Potter. I went and saw the stuff at Universal Studios. I have a wand sitting in my booth. And also, I’m a big fan of religious items, iconic imagery, I’ve got a collection of extremely old crosses, handmade crosses. I’ve got a seven-foot Bali statue in my house. ”

Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

A:” Deserts, mountains and nature.”

Q: If you had a full-time staff member that was fully paid for, who would you choose? Chef, Housekeeper, Driver, Coach, Physical Fitness Trainer, or Nanny?

A:” I would probably take the nanny and it would have to be a nanny for animals.”

Q: If you were cast into a major motion picture and had your choice of anyone to be your co-star, who would you choose?

A:” There are so many movie genres that I enjoy watching.  I would definitely be in a horror movie, probably a B Film, campy-horror movie. Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street…that type of thing. I love that type of thing.”

Q: If you were to choose one thing you do to contribute to your overall wellness?

A:”Taking time for myself, quiet room, nothing going on. I could use some of that. hahaha!”
